World Heritage Sites
Eleven sites in Peru have been registered by UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) as World Heritage Sites. Peru has the third highest number of such sites in the Americas, after Mexico and Brazil. Being registered as a World Heritage Site is a great honor and an international recognition that certainly brings prestige but also implies a great responsibility. The following places in Peru are listed as Cultural or Natural Heritage Sites, or both: La Ciudad Vieja del Cusco (1983), Santuario Histórico de Machu Picchu (1983), Sitio Arqueológico de Chavín (Archaeological Site) (1985), Parque NacionalHuascarán National Park (1985), Chan Chan Archaeological Zone (1986), Manú National Park (1987), Historic Centre of Lima (1988), Río Abiseo National Park (1990), Lines and Geoglyphs of Nasca and Pampas de Jumana (1994), Historical Centre of the City of Arequipa (2000) and Sacred City of Caral-Supe (2009).
