Peru is divided into three natural regions: the coast, highlands and jungle. Just about all the world's climates can be found here. The coast, crossed by rivers forming beautiful valleys and fine beaches on the Pacific Ocean, the highland cities, valleys and mountains and the vivid green jungle with its navigable rivers have a variety of microclimates. It is therefore important to wear the right clothes for the local climate wherever you go, so that you enjoy your trip. THE COAST December to April are the hottest months, so you can wear light clothes, but you should also bring something warmer as the temperature can drop somewhat at night. Between June and September you should wear warmer clothing as this is the coolest and dampest time of year, but climate change is affecting this; so you could wear lighter clothing under a jacket or sweater if you wish. During the rest of the year we recommend light clothing, a sweater and long trousers. The climate on the north coast is more suitable for summer clothes as it is hot almost all year and the temperature rises to 35°C in summer. THE HIGHLANDS You need to have the right clothes for the highlands. In this region the climate is dry, wear clothes that can easily be changed because the weather can vary at any moment. The best time to visit the highlands is April to October, when there is no rain and the days are sunny, with daytime temperatures up to 24°C (75°F), but at nights it can fall to -3°C (27°F) so you need to keep warm. The rainy season is from November to March, Sweater, waterproofs and long trousers are essential at this time. THE JUNGLE The jungle is a tropical region where clothing must be light weight; but long trousers and long-sleeved cotton clothes are essential in the jungle to protect against insects. The warm, wet and rainy climate with temperatures above 35°C (95°F) in the low jungle during the months of April to October make this the best time to visit. Waterproof boots, hats, sunglasses and sunscreen are also necessary, together with insect repellant, binoculars, a torch and bottled water or a canteen. The high jungle has a temperate subtropical climate with a lot of rain between November and March and sunny days between April and October. The clothes already mentioned can also be worn here. Occasional chilly periods or "surazos" can occur between May and August, when the temperature drops to 8°C (46°F).
